NIN Remixes 1992-2017

Quite a few years ago, on my The Unheard Music blog, I'd posted a lossless collection of remixes Trent Reznor with/and/or Nine Inch Nails did for other artists. The criteria was that they wouldn't be mixes for Trent's own projects, ala NIN or How to destroy angels, and they couldn't be for remix albums he was directly involved in, like Marilyn Manson's Smells Like Children. There were quite a few mixes that were difficult to find, barely released, or outright unreleased. Then the other day, I was contacted by a longtime follower of my blog(s) to ask if I still had those files. I asked him to give me a day or two to find them and I'd let him know. And that brings us to today, as I have re-uploaded those files and added a bit to them. Thanks to Ryan for reminding me to dig these out, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I hope he does.

For a rundown on what's here and what's been updated, first I want to note that there are some tracks here that are available for purchase online, but most are not, so, if you want to support your favorite artists, you should buy these tracks when you can. That's kind of a CYA statement as I don't like posting things that can be procured legally elsewhere, but as you will find, the majority of these tracks are not available anywhere legally.

First off, there are two distinct flavors for your listening enjoyment, a mostly lossless collection featuring all the tracks I'd previously posted with a few more added to update the collection to be as current as possible, and then an MP3 version with highlights from the collection for those that don't need EVERYTHING. I'm suspicious that there is a longer version of Trent's remix, different from Burnt Offering, as the Radio Edit was done by him and is not the same as the album version. Anyone got the inside scoop?

06 Queen - Stone Cold Crazy (Re-Produced by Trent Reznor)

07 Queen - Tie Your Mother Down (Re-Produced by Trent Reznor)

Neither of the Queen tracks were ever given proper releases, with Crazy being featured on at least one promo CD single and Mother never having been released. Both were shared as part of Erase Me: The Tainted Touch of Trent's Caress, a tape from the mid-nineties featuring a lot of Trent's early remix work and some rare tracks.

08 Curve - Missing Link (Screaming Bird Mix)

This is available on Curve's Bandcamp for purchase.

09 Butthole Surfers - Who Was in My Room Last Night (Trent Reznor Remix)

This doesn't appear to have been released outside a promotional CD for the Butthole Surfers' The Wooden Song.

10 Marilyn Manson - Mother Inferior Got Her Gunn

In light of recent events, I'm including this track for the sake of completion. The less said about Marilyn Manson, the better.

11 KMFDM - Light (Fat Back Dub)

This is definitely still available as part of the second volume of KMFDM's EXTRA complation.

12 David Bowie - The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Alt. Mix)

13 Killing Joke - Democracy (Conspiracy Theory Averted Mix)

14 Killing Joke - Democracy (Bi Partisan Mix)

15 Killing Joke - Democracy (Right Wing Militia Mix)

Trent was not directly involved in these Killing Joke remixes. He may not have been involved at all for all we know, but a later, previously unreleased version is credited as the NIN Remix, so I'm assuming he gave some kind of approval for it. Regardless, these mixes are very much in the style of NIN, and were created by the team of Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner and Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, all then-members of or collaborators with Trent and NIN and the original version of Tapeworm. These versions are all taken from the I'm Afraid of Americans EP. There are six versions on the EP, all remixed by Trent and the then-members of Nine Inch Nails, except for V5 which was remixed by Photek and is not included here. While versions of V1 are available on several reissues, the other versions do not appear to be available for legal purchase at this time.

21 Puff Daddy & The Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix)

23 Puff Daddy & The Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix) (Instrumental)

While the standard Nine Inch Nails remix was given a proper release on singles, the radio edit and instrumentals were only issued on promos.

24 12 Rounds - Pleasant Smell (Nothing Collective Rethink #1)

25 12 Rounds - Pleasant Smell (Nothing Collective Rethink #5)

These remixes are taken from the Nothing Records single for 12 Rounds' Pleasant Smell. It features five versions credited to the Nothing Collective, though they specify who was directly involved for each one. Numbers 1 and 5 were created by Trent, Clint Mansell and Keith Hillebrandt. The whole remix single is worth listening to, but as Trent was only involved in these two versions I decided not to include the other three here.

27 N*E*R*D - Lapdance (Trent Reznor Remix)

While the Clean Edit appears to have been released as part of the Spin This! compilation, it does not appear to have been made available for purchase anywhere else. The explicit version was never issued beyond promotional CDs and compilations.

29 Peter Gabriel - Growing Up (Trent Reznor Remix)

After not being available for quite a long time, Trent's remix of Growing Up has once again been made available as part of Peter Gabriel's Flotsam and Jetsam anthology of non-album tracks and rarities. It's a wonderfully exhaustive collection, so if you're a PG fan, you should look it up on your streaming platform of choice or purchase it here.

30 U2 - Vertigo (Trent Reznor Remix)

Like Marilyn Manson, the less said about U2, especially for this specific era, the better. This remix was made available on several singles and compilations.

31 Telepathe - Destroyer (Remix by A. Cortini, T. Reznor & A. Ross)

32 Todd Rundgren - Deaf Ears (Nine Inch Nails Mix)

33 David Bowie - I Can't Give Everything Away (Farewell Remix)

This remix was released anonymously on Soundcloud in 2017. It was briefly available for download as a 320kbps MP3 before the download option was removed. At the time, it was not stated that Trent and company had anything to do with it, though there were suspicions. Those suspicions were confirmed when Nine Inch Nails performed this arrangement of the song on tour in 2017 and 2018. Because this was never released in a format other than MP3, this is the sole lossy track in this collection.
